Fatal car accident in Brooklyn claims elderly pedestrian

Posted by Joseph F. Sullivan | Feb 15, 2014 | 0 Comments

As anyone in the New York City area knows, the dense population here means more cars on the road and a higher risk of serious or deadly accidents. This is why it is so important for everyone on the roadway to always be on alert and exercise caution. Sadly, a fatal car accident in Brooklyn recently claimed the life of an 80-year-old woman as she was trying to cross the street. The driver who struck her was cited afterwards for failure to yield and failure to exercise due care.

The tragic accident took place on a recent Tuesday afternoon around 1:35 p.m. in the Williamsburg neighborhood. According to reports, the driver was traveling northbound on Graham Avenue. She struck the woman as she was turning left onto Grand Street. The victim was reportedly crossing from the north to the south side of Grand Street at the time.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the elderly woman unresponsive and suffering from head trauma. The victim was pronounced dead after being transported to Bellevue Hospital. According to reports, the driver remained at the scene of the accident and was ticketed by police.

Unfortunately, incidents like this happen all too often in Brooklyn and elsewhere in New York. Because police determined that the driver was at fault, the victim's family may decide to pursue a claim for wrongful death. Any compensation awarded may help cover funeral and burial expenses as well as provide restitution for other damages. While a civil action can never ease the pain caused by this fatal car accident, it may help the family members obtain some peace of mind and a sense of justice as they try to move on.
